Are Invisalign clear aligners the best treatment option for you?

Dr. Krishnan is proud to offer the Invisalign system as a treatment option to our patients. These custom-made, clear aligners allow us to move and straighten teeth without using traditional wires and brackets. As with any type of orthodontic treatment, a complete evaluation and discussion with your orthodontist is necessary to determine the best course of treatment for you. It is important to note that this type of treatment may not be suitable for all patients. Please read through our frequently asked questions regarding Invisalign treatment to learn more!

Q. How often must I wear my aligners?

A. Your aligners need to be worn 22 hours daily. You may remove them for eating, drinking, and regular oral hygiene.

Q. Are there any restrictions to what I can eat while in treatment?

A. No. Unlike traditional braces, you may eat whatever you like as long as you remove the aligners before eating. Prior to putting the aligners back on, it is important to brush your teeth and the aligners thoroughly.

Q. Will wearing the aligners affect my speech?

A. Like any orthodontic treatment, there is a short adjustment period. However, practice makes perfect, and the more you speak with your aligners on, the quicker you will adjust!

Q. Is there any discomfort with Invisalign treatment?

A. After the initial insertion of an aligner, there could be some pressure and minor discomfort. When teeth are being moved into a different position it is normal for there to be slight discomfort, typically lasting 2-3 days. Remember it is a sign your teeth are moving into their correct position!

Q. Can I chew gum?

A. Aligners need to be worn 22 hours each day. They are taken out whenever you eat or drink, except water. If you want to chew gum, Dr. Krishnan recommends you only do so for a very short time so that you can achieve the required number of hours each day to move your teeth correctly.

Q. Can I smoke with the aligners in?

A. We discourage smoking with aligners as the cigarette smoke can discolor them.

Q. How do I keep my aligners clean?

A. Brushing them with toothpaste will keep them fresh and clean. Some patients prefer to brush their aligners with liquid antibacterial hand soap to help maintain the high shine and rinse them off with a little mouthwash for a fresh feeling before they are replaced. Brush your aligners whenever you brush your teeth.

Q. How often do I see Dr. Krishnan while I am being treated with Invisalign aligners?

A. Typically, every 6-8 weeks. Dr. Krishnan will establish the frequency he feels is best for your individual case. Seeing your orthodontist regularly ensures that your treatment is progressing as planned.

Q. What happens after my treatment is complete? Do I need retainers?

A. Yes. All Dr. Krishnan’s orthodontic patients whether they are treated with Invisalign or traditional braces will need to wear retainers when their treatment is completed. The frequency of wear will depend, and Dr. Krishnan will let you know what wearing schedule is right to help you maintain the beautiful new position of your teeth.

Q. How long does Invisalign treatment take?

A. Treatment time varies with each patient, depending on the severity of their bite problems. Dr. Krishnan will give you a realistic time frame for your individualized treatment when you come in for your evaluation. Most cases will range anywhere from 6-24 months.

Q. Does Invisalign work for kids?

A. Yes, if their teeth, including second molars, have grown in completely. Dr. Krishnan evaluates each case individually to determine the best treatment options.
